Ironman Training and Beetroot Juice: The Triathlete's Guide

Sep 23, 2025

Triathlon demands a unique physiological balance. You need sustained aerobic power on the bike and run, but you also need to recover fast enough to handle multiple daily sessions.

Beetroot is one of the most studied ergogenic aids for endurance athletes. But for Ironman training, it is not just a pre-workout boost. It is a tool for oxygen efficiency and recovery.

Why Triathletes Use Beetroot

Beetroot works through dietary nitrate. When you consume it, oral bacteria convert the nitrate to nitrite. This is then reduced to nitric oxide (NO) in the body.

Nitric oxide widens blood vessels. This improves blood flow and oxygen delivery to working muscles. The result is a lower oxygen cost at a given pace or power output.

A 2023 study on triathletes found that beetroot juice supplementation significantly promoted aerobic endurance and anabolism. A 2026 study on amateur triathletes confirmed that it enhances the nitric oxide pathway without causing lipid oxidative damage.

The Whole-Root Matrix vs. Nitrate Salts

Not all beetroot supplements are equal.

The research shows that whole-root beetroot juice or extract is superior to isolated nitrate salts. A mini-review in Frontiers in Nutrition found that beetroot juice offers additional advantages over nitrate salts, specifically in reducing VOâ‚‚ during high-intensity exercise.

This is why Stamox uses a patented whole-root extract. It preserves the full matrix of active compounds: nitrates, betaine, betalains, and polyphenols. Isolating just the nitrate misses the synergistic effect.

How to Use It in Training

For standard sessions: Take 1 tablespoon of Stamox mixed with water, 2–3 hours before training. This allows plasma nitrite levels to peak, improving oxygen efficiency during the session.

For heavy blocks: Daily use over 3–7 days builds a baseline of nitric oxide in the blood. This is especially useful during high-volume weeks where recovery is critical.

Race Day Strategy

A single dose on race morning is not enough for an Ironman. You need to load.

Start 5 to 7 days out. Use the same daily dose to saturate your muscle tissue.

On race morning, take 2–3 tablespoons 2.5 to 3 hours before the start gun. For a full Ironman, consider a top-up dose on the bike.
