Sophie Souwer’s Return

Anna Sarah Sophie Souwer, born on 29 June 1987 in the Netherlands.

Sophie is one of the most accomplished rowers of her generation. She won World Championship gold in 2017 and medaled again in 2018 and 2019 in the women’s quadruple sculls (W4x). She competed at Rio 2016, finishing sixth in the women’s eight, and placed 7th in the single scull (W1x) at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

After Tokyo, Sophie stepped away from elite sport. She felt physically and mentally drained, having pushed through post-Covid challenges and a serious back injury. But in 2024, while supporting her Dutch teammates at the Paris Olympics, something shifted. As she watched from the sidelines, a familiar fire reignited. As she told World Rowing in a 2025 interview:

“There’s something there that you can only solve by trying again.”

That same year, Sophie welcomed her son Michele into the world, on 25 April 2024, together with her husband and coach, Martino Goretti. With a renewed sense of purpose and balance, she made a bold decision: to return to competition—this time, proudly representing Italy.

In June 2025, Sophie made her official comeback at the World Rowing Cup in Varese, racing in the women’s single scull (W1x) for Italy. She placed 3rd in her heat, 5th in the semifinal, and finished 5th in the B Final—a strong and promising return after four years away from the international stage.

Now, she is all in—combining motherhood, part-time work, training, and recovery to pursue one clear goal: Winning gold for Italy in the women’s single scull at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

Natural Performance

Sophie & Coach Martino Goretti are using Stamox Beetroot Extract Powder to boost performance in a natural way both on and off water.

“So far, it’s fantastic.

The flavour is a welcome change—not as aggressive as drinking straight beetroot juice, and it’s super easy to use. In training, I simply feel better than usual.

We’re now putting it to the test, tracking wattage, VO2 max, and other data to see the hard numbers as we go. The initial feeling, however, is incredibly promising”.
